Chairman's
Report AGM 2007 14 June 2007
Good evening Ladies and Gentlemen, thank you for making
the effort to be here this evening. After our AGM on
the 25th of May last year, we had a stretch where lectures
remained thin on the ground with a few promises, but
not much in the way of confirmation. As a result, our
first event was our Golf day on the 6th of August at
Cato Ridge Country Club. Though it was a great day of
golf, unfortunately the day was marred by the aggressive
intervention of unruly caddies who harassed people manning
our sponsored holes as well as theft from our players.
I did put a formal written complaint to the management
of the course, but still await a reply. In the light
of this, we decided that we could not, in good conscience,
return to this venue and risk the safety and security
of our members and guests. Thus this year the event
is being held at Bluff National Park Golf Course on
the 19th of August. As no other lectures were forthcoming,
the committee decided to fund some lectures that may
be of interest to members, even if no sponsorship were
available. On the 21st of September, we held a screening
of the lecture given by Prof Dr Marc von Parys on "Low
Hanging Fruit Technologies" that was given at NATCON
2006, and had raised much interest. This was screened
on audio visual equipment purchased by SADFA in order
to reduce our dependency on hiring certain equipment
for lectures and events, as well as enhance lectures
for students where relevant. It will also afford us
the opportunity to show some of the material that has
been purchased such as the NATCON 2006 DVDs and other
items that may be of interest. On the 5th of October,
Mr Walter Simeoni, Group Managing Director of the Frame
Group, who had been recently elected as President of
the International Textile Manufacturers Federation,
made room in his busy schedule to give SADFA a presentation
on "Energy Savings: A meaningful Contributor to Cost
Effectiveness". He also discussed issues pertaining
to the quotas implemented in January this year against
China. In November, we held our Annual Dinner Dance
and had the pleasure of the company of Damon Beard of
East Coast Radio fame. A fabulous evening was had by
those who attended. Unfortunately, as Greig will confirm,
we did not break even on this event due to the low attendance.
Hopefully we will see better support this year. Your
committee has some ideas of how to make this year's
event every bit as enjoyable, but if you would like
to add your input, please contact them, as we will be
booking the event in the very near future. Unfortunately
if it does not get the required support to make it self-funding,
we will have to consider removing it from the calendar.
Again, at the beginning of 2007, though some companies
hoped to bring out principals in the first quarter of
the year, unfortunately they were unable to offer speakers,
so on the 22nd of March, Dr Hoosen Rasool, of the CTFL
SETA, kindly agreed to give us a lecture. We held the
event at a new venue, the Endabeni Conference Centre,
which, though a little challenging to find at first,
turned out to be a very pleasant setting. Dr Rasool
gave an extremely interesting lecture on the Sector
Skills Plan for the CTFL SETA which sparked a lively
discussion with the audience, highlighting how pertinent
education and training is in the future of our industry.
Rob Stewart of the Clothing and Textile Cluster of KZN
gave us an excellent lecture on "World Class Manufacturing
and the Benefits of Clustering", on the 19th of April.
Considering how our industry could use all the advice
it can get right now, especially in this type of arena,
I was disappointed that more people didn't make the
effort to attend, especially those in manufacturing
to whom this applies completely. For more information,
the CTC does however have a website and I urge you visit
it for some practical inspiration. The address is on
the SADFA website if you don't have it already. Unfortunately,
our May lecture had to be postponed, but no doubt we
will be able to call on Bill Gosling at a later stage.
On our future programme we have Dinesh Naidu of the
SABS who has committed to a presentation on the 28th
of June and Han Kuilderd of Novozymes who will present
on "Textile Enzymes Technology" on the 19th of July.
We are hoping to put together a collaborative Educational
debate and/or workshop, but the exact form this will
take needs to be clarified before we can schedule it.
We'll keep you posted! Socially, as mentioned, we look
forward to our Golf Day on the 19th of August, and no
doubt the Dinner Dance will be booked shortly. For our
SADFA course, we have also approved the purchase of
a set of excellent Educational interactive DVDs, on
dyeing and finishing, from SDCNZA, the branch of the
SDC active in New Zealand and Australia, that should
be of immense benefit to our students. Again, SYMPOTEX
2008 is in the offing, it will be held at the Holiday
Inn Elangeni, in Durban from registration on Wednesday
the 12th till Friday the 14th of March next year. We
look forward to your support at this event and have
complete confidence that it will again be a great success.
As a last point, I have mentioned I am not standing
for chairman again this evening, so, I would like to
thank my committee from the past year as well as the
people on the various committees over the three years
I have been chairman, for their immense efforts and
support during this time. As an industry, we obviously
are facing lean times, and I think under the circumstances,
the teams involved have done a sterling job of running
your association. Again, I would like to stress, the
committee runs the association for its members, not
in isolation, so, as members I urge you to get involved,
give your input and make the most of your committee's
efforts. Especially those of you in senior, management
and supervisory positions, be here and encourage and
expect your colleagues and subordinates to be here,
apart from the knowledge they will acquire, the network
that forms between people within the industry can prove
invaluable. With that I hope you give the incoming committees
your sincere support and wish them everything of the
very best for the year to come.

Title:
World class manufacturing and
benefits of clustering.
It
was without doubt a completely pertinent and relevant topic in our
industry right now and the practical advantages of clustering and World
Class Production could be key to the survival of
our local Clothing and Textile Industries. This subject is
applicable to all levels of the organisation,
and daunting as it may seem in its entirety, every small change in the
right direction gets us closer to the ideal.
The CTC's website is worth a visit at www.kznctc.org.za and Rob indicated
that he will send me the presentation, so those of you who would like to
have a copy can contact me in a few days and I should be able to send it
to you.
