Chairman's Report at the AGM 13 May 2008

Good evening ladies and gentlemen thank you for attending this AGM tonight.

As a new comer to this organization I had the pleasure of working with a dedicated and motivated committee. I want to thank them for there support. Heidi Alcock and Chris Gosling will not be standing for committee this year. I want to thank both of them for the time they served on the committee and welcome them as dedicated members.

2007 was a difficult year for the industry and this was felt through out. Lectures remain thin on the ground.

The lectures that was held:

1. 19 July 2007 : Han Kuilderd from Novozymes :

Topic: Textile Enzymes Technology

2. 23 August 2007 : The regional manger of the SABS in Durban

Topic: the role of the SABS in the textile and related

Related industries.

3. 6 November 2007 : Acti- chem. Hosted the evening

: Sheritha Ismail of Metallica gave a lecture on

Hazchem handling Chemicals friend or Foe?

4. 7 February 2008 CHT: hosted the evening.

The speaker was Andreas Troscheit

The topic: Different textile finishes

SADFA hosted various functions

1. Golf day 19 August at the Bluff Country Club. It was an enjoyable day that was well supported. Our annual golf day for 2008 is 7 September at Toti country club. Tee off is 8.30. Greig can be contacted for bookings.

2. Student’s awards evening was held on the 6 September at the Elangeni.

Dr Justine Barnes of the KZN Textile cluster enlightened us on how world class manufacturing principles can give the South African Textiles an opportunity to grow.

The top student’s awards went to:

1. 3 year student : Dennis Gibson from Aranda textiles

2. 2 year student : Moonsamy Raju from Frame

3. 1 year student: Devindron Govender from Standard textiles.

Students that completed the course were:

1. Nishall Maharaj of Celrose

2. Rodney Kallu of garment finishers

3. Dennis Gibson Of Frame textiles

4. Eugene Madlala of Colourite

5. Devindron Govender of Standard textiles.

The purchasing of a lap top computer and projector for the use in the SADFA course was approved by the main committee. Colourclick was made available to students and a set of training DVD ‘s was purchase to be used in the SADFA course. SADFA also supported the SDC designing competition in giving prize money to the winner and runner up.

Thank to the education committee and the lectures for all your efforts.

Our year end function was held on the 30 November at the Heritage theatre. It was in the form of a supper theatre. The evening was a great success. Due to the success of the evening our year end function will be in the same format this year.

Sympotex 2008 will be from the 11 -13 June at the Elangeni.

The sympotex committee is:

Chair person: Mr. John Baker

Secretary Heidi Alcock

Sponsorship: Louisa Fourie

Treasurer: Nigel Radcliff

Programme: Charles Peake

A lot of hard work took place and with Sympotex 4 weeks away we need all the support we can get. Registration forms are available for those of you that have not registered. An event like this prevents the industry from being alienated from new technology. Thank you to everybody that is involved in this event.

In closing, the industry is faced with many challenges, with rising costs load shedding the inflation rate. At the fashion imbizo that was held in Cape Town this past week Mr. Ebrahim Patel of Sactwu said that the imports from China has dropped with 31% and 12% from other parts of the world since quotas was introduced this was only a temporary measure and will expire in 8 months time. Government, the union and role players in the industry are working on a sector plan for the industry to assist in the stabilization of the industry. I believe SADFA plays a very important role in the industry as SADFA is a vessel to educate industry on new technology and it is also a place to network.

I thank each member for your support. Any origination can only grow if they have the support of its member.

Uta Hagen said these true words :

We must overcome the notion that we must be regular…. It robs us of the chance to be extraordinary and leads us to the mediocre.

Thank you.
Louisa Fourie

Title: World class manufacturing and benefits of clustering.

It was without doubt a completely pertinent and relevant topic in our industry right now and the practical advantages of clustering and World Class Production could be key to the survival of our local Clothing and Textile Industries.  This subject is applicable to all levels of the organisation, and daunting as it may seem in its entirety, every small change in the right direction gets us closer to the ideal.

The CTC's website is worth a visit at www.kznctc.org.za and Rob indicated that he will send me the presentation, so those of you who would like to have a copy can contact me in a few days and I should be able to send it to you.
