SDC Global Design Competition 2009

Overall winner to receive the SDC Colour Design Award 2009 at the grand final in Goa, India

Dear Members interested parties,

As an affiliate of the SDC, SADFA has been invited to participate in the international Colour in Design competition again this year.  Last year Chantal Bekker of Tswane University of Technology was our winning participant, and Ilze-Mari Botha our runner up. Apart from her local prize donated by SADFA, Chantal enjoyed visiting the UK courtesy of the SDC and attending a gala awards evening.  This year the Grand final will be held in Goa, India.

Please find the brief and rules below copied from the SDC website on the link:  www.sdc.org.uk/members/competition.htm .

If anyone is interested in participating in the competition or if you know of anyone who is currently studying either Textile or Fashion Design, please feel free to pass on the information to them.

We are also looking for companies who would be willing to contribute towards sponsorship of prize money for the winner and runner up of the South African leg of the competition.  Obviously SADFA would ensure that the company (ies) would be publicly acknowledged for their generosity.

Judging of the SA leg will take during March 2009.

News Release

SDC Global Student Design Competition

Launch of the SDC Colour Design Award 2009

Following the success of the recent global student design competition, the Society of Dyers and Colourists (SDC) is now launching the search for undergraduate talent in fashion and textile design. Entries will be invited for the SDC Colour Design Award 2009 from students following a recognised fashion/textile undergraduate course, with regional heats to be held around the world early next year.

The competition is open to entries from the following countries: Australia, Bangladesh, China, Hong Kong, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka, the United Kingdom and the United States. Each SDC region/affiliate around the globe, together with the AATCC in the United States, will organise its own competition based on a universal brief. Each country finalist will then be invited to go forward to the grand final which will be held in Goa, India in June 2009.

The grand final will coincide with the SDC international conference on 25–26 June in India and, to tie with the theme of the conference, the brief also incorporates an aspect of sustainable thinking within the original design and/or final design application. The main criteria for entries, as previously, will be to demonstrate the creative, imaginative and original use of colour in either fashion or textiles.

Deadlines for submission will be dependent on specific regional/country criteria, with judging generally taking place within the first quarter of 2009. All regional winners will be informed by the end of April 2009 and, along with the regional prize allocation, the finalist from each country will also receive payment towards travelling expenses and accommodation in India.

The global winner will receive the SDC Colour Design Award 2009, with a cash prize of £1000, plus the Veronica Bell Trophy. The winning college will also receive a prize.

A full design competition brief is available from the Society with a list of regional contacts to whom enquiries regarding country-specific briefs should be sent. Alternatively, the competition briefs and various related document can be downloaded from the SDC website at the following address: www.sdc.org.uk/members/competition.htm

SDC Colour in Design brief and rules

Criteria

  1. ‘To demonstrate the creative, imaginative and original use of colour in either fashion or textiles’

All entries should show evidence of the following:

  1. colour as an integral component of the design process
  2. development of the designs, from concept to final design product or application
  3. excellent presentation and clarity of ideas
  4. innovative or creative approach to incorporating some aspect of sustainable thinking within the original design and/or final design application.

The judges will assign marks for each of these four categories.
Deliverables

  1. Work mounted on no more than four A3 or A2 boards.
  2. Type-written statement on one A4 sheet.

Basis of submission

  1. The work can be based on a fashion or textile design project produced as part of the standard course curriculum or for the SDC Colour Design Award.
  2. Content is at the discretion of the student, but can include finished roughs, design sheets, illustrations, working drawings, mood boards, photographs, fabric indicators, material swatches, etc. At least one board must outline the colour theme with the colour palette clearly indicated.
  3. Each submission must be uniquely titled to reflect its nature and theme and must be supported by a typewritten description in English (no more than one A4 page / 200–500 words) explaining the background and inspiration for the work.
  4. Boards: these should only be A3 (297 x 420 mm) or A2 (420 x 594 mm) in size, with your artwork securely mounted on. Never submit any more than the number of boards requested.
  5. Only one entry may be submitted by each student.
  6. A maximum of three entries per college; one tutor should be identified as the contact per college and be responsible for submitting an entry form.

Judging
A key component of this competition is that the students will be invited to bring their boards & statements to the regional heats. They will meet judges and have the opportunity to give some background on their project and, in particular, their use of colour. Where it is not feasible for the students to be present at the regional judging, alternative arrangements may be made.
