Please see the note from Tracey Cochrane of the SDC below that was sent out to SDC competition coordinators.
We are beside ourselves to announce that the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University has now managed to bag a hat trick of wins at the SDC International Design Competition, the judging of which was held in Hong Kong on the 2nd of December.
Our unreserved and heartfelt congratulations go to Shannon Daniell of PE for a phenomenal achievement. We should never take this lightly, as each country has multiple heats prior to submitting their national winner, so Shannon effectively surpassed hundreds of entrants worldwide!
Attached is a photograph of Shannon with her trophy, runners up and fellow National winners from countries across the world.
We have every reason to be very, very proud of our SA design talent.

Dear All
I'm delighted to bring you news of SDC's International Design Competition 2011. I have just returned from 3 very busy and exciting days in Hong Kong. As always, it was a real pleasure to meet the students. The competition judging took place on 2nd December, followed by a banquet dinner and the announcement of the winners and presentation of prizes (to a capacity audience of 180 people!). The winners were as follows:
1st place: Shannon Daniell, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, South Africa
2nd place: Afsana Wormey, BGMEA Institute of Fashion and Technology, Bangladesh
3rd place: Asiima Mawudoku, London Metropolitan University, UK
The competition judges were as follows: Chris Sargeant, Vice-Chair of SDC Board of Trustees, Geeta Castelino, Consultant, Fashion Journalist and education specialist from India, and Dr Kinor Jiang, Associate Professor, Institute of Textiles and Clothing at Hong Kong Polytechnic University. The judges really enjoyed meeting the students, and they commented on the overall high standard and range of creative ideas. There were a number of very strong entries, so I hope your student isn't too disappointed if they weren't one of the winners - it's worth remembering they were all winners just to reach Hong Kong!
I would like to thank you for coordinating the competition in 2011. I think all the students had a great time in Hong Kong, made some new friends, and hopefully have learned from the experience.
We will shortly be bringing you further news of the competition for 2012 - we will be officially announcing the location for the grand final very soon.
