Title of the Article:
Demand Side Management (DSM)

Presenter: Sanjay Patel, Eskom

Article Brief:
The need for electricity in South Africa has increased in recent years. As a result, peak demand of Electricity has also increase. This puts a strain on the country's electricity resources - Eskom needs to generate more electricity for a short peak period. The result is that more Power Stations need to be built which will stand idle for much of the day. This will result in the consumer having to bear the cost. By using electricity efficiently, South African consumers limit the need for new power stations and help to keep costs down. Through better use of resources, all can benefit from reduced electricity costs.

Energy Efficiency & Energy Conservation is one of the best ways to limit the impact of energy use on the environment, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, promoting sustainable use of energy resources and reducing energy costs. It is said that energy saved is energy generated. This means that conserving energy is an alternative source of energy

Textile manufacturing cost in South Africa is higher than eastern countries. One of the manufacturing cost components is the energy cost. Load management, energy efficiency and energy conservation can reduce the energy cost. There is potential to save money through energy efficiency and implementing DSM. Every cent saved will increase the competitive advantage of the textile industry.

“Energy Conservation is of great importance to everyone in South Africa
